Navigating Towards Excellence
The Golden Dream
How good is good enough? And what kind of leadership is needed to get there? The ‘Mountain Curve’ and the ‘Leadership for Learning Framework’ provide answers.
Holistic Accountability
Excellence—can you get there from here? Yes, but only if you know where ‘here’ and ‘there’ are. In this section you will apply the concept of the ‘School Portfolio’ to determine your school’s strengths and then assess best strategies for improvement.
Focus on Nonfiction Writing
Writing and thinking go hand in hand. In this section you will develop a plan for building writing into your school’s DNA using the BC Performance Standards and a school-wide writing plan.
Frequent Common Assessments
Plans come and go, but teacher behavior is constant. We will learn how frequent common assessments can help teachers focus on essential learning outcomes and shift their emphasis from teaching to learning.
Immediate and Decisive Interventions
The literature is very clear—early intervention is key to students’ success. We will investigate some practical strategies for reaching students early and effectively with the help they need.
The Constructive Use of Data
Finally, we will review several assessment strategies that provide clear and useful data at the student, class, grade and school levels. We will examine ways to ensure that this information is instrumental in helping your school achieve its goals.
