Overview: Dr. Ken Smitherman, President, ACSI
Ken Smitherman, LL.D., began his responsibilities as president of the Association of Christian Schools International, Colorado Springs, Colorado, on July 1, 1996.
He began his career in education as a public school teacher and principal. In 1970 he began his Christian school career as the administrator of Greenleaf Friends Academy, Greenleaf, Idaho, from which he graduated. From 1984 until coming to ACSI, he served as the superintendent of King’s Schools and vice president of CRISTA Ministries (an organization that includes nine separate ministries) in Seattle, Washington.
Ken Smitherman was an elected ACSI board member for twelve years. As a board member he served on the Executive Committee, served as Board Chairman, and chaired the Legal/Legislative and the Long-range Planning committees. During his tenure in Washington, he served on the board of the Washington Federation of Independent Schools.
He married his high-school sweetheart, Karen. Today they have four grown daughters, two of whom teach in Christian schools. His oldest daughter was a fourth generation graduate of the Christian high school in Idaho where Ken served as administrator. Ken and Karen also have eight grandchildren.

Affordability/Funding: Dr. Alan Pue, President, The Barnabas Group
Dr. Alan Pue is president of The Barnabas Group, a ministry that specializes in providing strategic planning and resource development assistance to churches, Christian schools, and colleges. He has earned an M.Ed. from Florida Atlantic University and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Delaware.
Dr. Pue has been involved in Christian schooling most of his life. He is a 1967 graduate of Dade Christian School, served for several years as a Christian school teacher, guidance counselor and coach, and then as headmaster at Pike Creek Christian School in Newark, Delaware where he ministered for 15 years. During his last 10 years there he also served as senior pastor of the Pike Creek Valley Baptist Church.
In 1996, Alan accepted a call to serve as Senior Vice President and Provost of The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California. During the five years of his leadership the college experienced four consecutive years of record enrollment and was recognized for the first time by US News and World Report as a top-tier regional liberal arts college.
In his current capacity as President of The Barnabas Group, Dr. Pue travels extensively throughout North America speaking at Christian school conferences and working with ministry leaders in the areas of strategic planning, governance, and marketing. He has served on the President’s Council of the Christian Stewardship Association, as a visiting faculty member at the Meyer Institute for Steward Leadership, is the author of over two dozen published articles, and is currently working on a book about ministry planning.
He has been happily married to his wife, Linda, for 35 years, and has two married children, both graduates of Christian schools, and three beautiful granddaughters.
Curriculum: Dr. Bruce Lockerbie, PAIDEIA, Inc.
After 35 years of teaching and administering, ending in 1991, D. Bruce Lockerbie now leads a team of consultants called PAIDEIA, Inc. [ pie-day-ah ], working with schools, colleges/universities/seminaries, as well as churches, helping agencies, and other institutions. Lockerbie is also a director of OLYMPVS INTERNATIONAL AG, providing facility and event planning for sports organizations at scholastic, collegiate, international, and Olympic levels.
Bruce Lockerbie received degrees in English and American Studies from New York University. He has been awarded honorary degrees by Eastern University [ 1985 ] and Taylor University [ 1993 ]. After a year as English instructor and track coach at Wheaton College, Lockerbie served on the faculty of The StonyBrook School, 1957-1991, as chairman of the English and Fine Arts departments, then as Dean of Faculty. Upon leaving The Stony Brook School, he held the appointment of Thomas F. Staley Foundation Scholar-in-Residence.
Lockerbie is author, co-author, or editor of forty books whose topics range broadly: aesthetics, biography, literary and social criticism, history, education, family living, popular theology, as well as textbooks. A frequent lecturer at schools, college, universities, and seminaries, Lockerbie has also held endowed lectureships at the Chautauqua Institution. As a consultant, Lockerbie has worked across the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Switzerland, Kenya, Ethiopia, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, and Uzbekistan.
Married in 1956, Bruce and Lory Lockerbie have two sons and a daughter. The Lockerbies are active in the parish ministry of the Caroline Church of Brookhaven, an evangelical Episcopal parish. A one-time national champion and world-ranked middledistance runner for New York University and the New York Athletic Club, Lockerbie now concentrates on improving his skills as a left-handed golfer. A hole-in-one has already won him a new car, but he’s not ready for the PGA tour.
Spiritual Formation: Dr. William Brown, President, Cedarville University
Dr. William E. Brown became president of Cedarville University in June 2003, following a 10- year presidency at Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn. A graduate of the University of South Florida, Brown holds a master of theology degree and Ph.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary.
As a nationally recognized expert in worldview, Brown has authored three books—Making Sense of Your Faith; Where Have All the Dreamers Gone? Observations from a Biblical Worldview; and Making Sense of Your World with Gary Phillips—and more than one hundred articles for journals, magazines, encyclopedias, and newspapers. He is also the executive producer of re:Films, a film series which helps students discern culture (www.re-films.com).
Some of Brown’s more recent achievements include: writing Fear Factors: Barriers to Intellectual Growth for ACSI Christian School Education magazine, which was also translated into Spanish for the ACSI Educacion Escolar Cristiana magazine; contributing 30 articles for the soon-to-be-published Student Leadership Bible from Nelson Publishing; and having his Re:View study used by several schools in Hong Kong and Korea, as well as nationally broadcast in Romania.
Brown holds memberships in organizations such as the Society of Christian Philosophers, the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and the Evangelical Theological Society. He has also lectured internationally in Europe, the former Soviet Union, and South America.
Married since 1976, Brown and his wife, Lynne Jones Brown, are the parents of April and Alex.

Taylor Smith has over 33 years of experience in education. He has served as a teacher both in public and Christian schools and has been a Christian middle school principal, a Christian high school principal, and a Christian school superintendent. He has been an active member of ACSI for over 20 years serving as a Regional District Representative, Regional Council Member, and for seven years, as an Executive Board Member chairing the Association Services and Legal Legislative Committees.
Taylor received his bachelor’s degree from Kentucky State University, a master’s degree from The Ohio State University and post graduate studies at The Ohio State University, Grace Theological Seminary, Cedarville University, George Fox University, and Moody Bible Institute.
Taylor and his wife Joyce are parents of three adult children, all Christian school graduates, and are grandparents to eight grandchildren, four of whom are enrolled in Christian schools.
