Asheville Christian Academy Hurricane Helene

Asheville Christian Academy

Swannanoa, NC

Standing in the wreckage of Hurricane Helene, Jason Putnam, Head of School at Asheville Christian Academy, recounted to Fox News the experience that he and so many others in the school community have faced due to the storm’s devastation.

“It’s difficult with no power and no water,” he shared. “For many days, we went without cell service.”

The school, located in Swannanoa, NC, endured tremendous floodwaters that deposited homes and cars onto their sports fields. In his first year as head of school, Putnam rallied with school leadership and local relief agencies to meet the needs as best he could.

“Our tagline is Christ in everything, and so we try to put Him at the center of everything we do,” he reflected. “Our school has received an outpouring of support from schools all over the United States… it’s so heartwarming to receive such support and prayers during a difficult time.”

After several days, things are starting to move forward.

The school is scheduled to begin at two offsite locations in late October. Clean up is progressing as the school works with FEMA and the EPA on land clearing.

They have been in touch with a general contractor for rebuilding, as well as with vendors to assess furniture and fixture needs. Athletics and fine arts will be resuming as the school has found host sites for those activities.

While there are many positive developments, Putnam shared that he is still trying to find temporary homes for staff who remain without water and/or power.

He shared that prayer is their biggest need. “Please pray that God continues to meet our daily needs,” he said.

Update 11/20/24

Asheville Christian Academy, located in Swannanoa, NC, endured tremendous floodwaters from Hurricane Helene that rushed the school, depositing homes and cars onto its sports fields. In his first year as head of school, Jason Putnam rallied with school leadership and local relief agencies to meet the needs as best he could.

In the weeks following the storm, Biltmore Church graciously opened its doors at two of its campuses to host the school, including in-person classes and chapels.

On Asheville Christian’s campus, renovations are underway, including new flooring instillation, painting, and mitigation on the grounds and fields. School leadership anticipates that faculty will be able to move back into their classrooms over Christmas break, prepared to resume classes on campus January 7.

“Our tagline is Christ in everything, and so we try to put Him at the center of everything we do,” Putnam reflected. “Our school has received an outpouring of support from schools all over the United States… it’s so heartwarming to receive such support and prayers during a difficult time.”

While there is much to be grateful for, the school is still in need of prayer and support.

Augusta Christian Schools

Martinez, GA

Augusta Christian School’s area was hit hard by the storm.  As many say, it quite literally looks like a war zone.  There are trees and power lines down everywhere.  While Augusta did not get the flooding that North Carolina got, residents faced winds over 80 mph and gusts up to 100 mph. The school itself was spared for the most part with damaged and missing awnings and some roof damage.  A maintenance building and truck were crushed as was the football concession stand.  The faculty has worked hard to get both campuses back in operating condition. The biggest area for prayer is for the faculty and staff.  Some, like Head of School Les Walden, have had significant damage to their homes and are forced to relocate while waiting for repairs.  All of them lost power and some lost water anywhere from a few days to some still out. One thing is for sure, as Walden shared, that “throughout it all, the Lord is faithful in all things and at every moment.  He has helped us to slow down from our normal busyness and be thankful for His mercy and grace.”

Curtis Baptist School

Augusta, GA

Curtis Baptist School is more than a place of learning—it is a close-knit family, devoted to nurturing 280 students and their families in one of the most underserved areas of Augusta. Their mission is to raise Kingdom leaders who serve Christ, and in times of need, they stand together as a community. Hurricane Helene has deeply impacted the school. Many of their families and teachers are still without power or water, with some losing their homes entirely. Curtis itself has suffered major damage—the roofs are torn apart, half of the buildings have no air conditioning, and the athletic facility has been severely compromised. The storm even demolished a brick wall at the back of the school’s property, raising safety concerns for the community. The school faculty is doing all they can to restore the school, but they need help to continue supporting students and families as they rebuild and heal together.

Reynolds Mountain Christian Academy

Asheville, NC

Reynolds Mountain Christian Academy school leaders have reported that the school is going to have to find alternative water sources in order to reopen. In the devastation, it may be months before water is restored to the area.

Shiloh Baptist Learning Center

Plant City, FL

Shiloh Baptist Learning Center suffered flooding damage from Hurricane Milton. Please continue to pray for them as they clean up and repair our center.

Tri-County Christian School

Spruce Pine, NC

Tri-County Christian School in Spruce Pine, NC is asking for prayer. The community was greatly impacted by Hurricane Helene. They specifically need prayer for the water system to hold. Roads are very precarious and difficult to travel.

This is a real-time opportunity for students to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Our ACSI Impacted Schools List (see below) offers contact information to reach out directly. Incoming service ideas, from collecting babysitting money to writing notes of encouragement, are truly inspiring. At a recent Leadership Network Meeting in Raleigh, schools were brainstorming how to help displaced families served by area member schools. Thank you for thinking outside the box.
