In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Peoria Christian School’s Key Club held a babysitting event aimed at raising relief funds for ACSI schools impacted by the storm.

This year, the club, guided by a student-elected board, selected babysitting as their central project to support needs in the Christian community. With roughly 50 members committed to the mission, the club planned a sequence of four babysitting days in October, December, February, and April, each designed to generate financial support for various projects. However, before any mission organizations had been contacted, Helene hit, and the Key Club Board, members, and advisors unanimously decided to direct their efforts to support ACSI schools impacted by Helene.

The babysitting event in October was met with an outpouring of support, raising $478 in donations from grateful parents who appreciated the cause, as well as the care provided for their children. All proceeds were designated for ACSI schools affected by Hurricane Helene, with funds forwarded to ACSI to ensure timely aid.

“The students were thrilled to be able to serve [in this way] as Christ would serve for those in need,” stated Peoria Christian Superintendent Dr. Angie Lyons. The participants found joy in engaging with younger students and took pride in knowing their efforts were directly contributing to hurricane relief. “We are not sure who has more fun—the high school students that are babysitting, the elementary students who are being babysat, or the parents!”

Under the guidance of Tobey Hauter, the Key Club Advisor, students are encouraged to approach these efforts with a Christ-centered perspective. She helps them see that their service embodies compassion and reflects Christ’s love, even from afar. Though they cannot physically assist with recovery efforts on site, these students have found a powerful way to help by supporting ACSI’s mission through heartfelt, dedicated service.

Looking ahead, Peoria Christian School Key Club remains steadfast in its commitment to Hurricane Helene and related relief efforts. Their babysitting initiative exemplifies how young people can creatively use their skills and time to impact lives both locally and beyond. This project is not only about raising funds—it’s about building and helping those in need in the ACSI community, developing leadership, and living out faith through service to others.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” –Mark 10:45.
